The 2013 campaign may be in its infancy, but early season indicators are pointing to a changing of the guard in the Bob’s Towing Thunder Car division at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Speedway. After dominating the field by winning every main event on the way to last year’s track championship, Oshawa, Ontario’s John Baker Jr. has seen the fresh schedule get off to a rough start. The racer known as ‘JBJ’ currently sits 8th in track points after a pair of events. Speedway manager Glenn Butt says looking at the Thunder Car standings and not finding the #63 at the top of the heap is an unusual sight.
“Racing luck can be fickle,” said Butt. “Sometimes, it’ll work in your favour and other times it works against you. John has had a tough beginning to the year, but based on his history in the sport, he’ll likely turn things around. The team is working hard to get their program back on track and I’m sure they’ll be back among the frontrunners again before too much longer.”
Like their counterparts in the Late Model division, the point’s race in the Thunder Car field is very tight, with different winners in each of the year’s main events. Ken Donaldson Jr. made the trip to victory lane to open the season, while his unofficial team mate Howie Crowe parked his Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the same spot a week later. Crowe’s #28 machine leads the points with 96, while Donaldson is 4 markers behind. Bob Kish sits 3rd, a half dozen points behind the #03.
