Race #26                              Garry Reynolds Memorial

On Sunday afternoon the 3rd Annual Garry Reynolds Memorial 100 lap Invitational was held at Barrie Speedway.  The race was one of the most prestigious races for 2014 and attracted a field of 32 Late Models to compete for 26 positions.  

The race was scheduled for Saturday September 21st but rained out.  We were on display on Saturday at MacMaster Buick GMC.  The rained out event was rescheduled for Sunday the 22nd, at 2PM, making it tough for us because we were at Wallace Buick GMC on Sunday. However we were told by the Dealer Principal that we could leave early to get to the track as early as possible.  We were there from 8:am and left by 12:30. It took us until 1:50 to get to Barrie Speedway, and when we arrived we were without any hot laps, and worse, there were 32 cars. 

We also missed the drivers meeting meaning we would have to start at the back of both of our qualifying races, creating more pressure on us, but it didn’t upset our team.  Once in our pad, we were lucky to get one, we made a best guess set up because we had only ran this track once in the past 10 years. In 2012.  

We started 11th in both of our heat races.  In the first qualifier there were four cautions and we narrowly got taken out in every one.  We were body checked, brake checked, slammed into and through it all we finished 5th. 

We raced hard against the home track boys who knew with 32 cars, 6 cars would not make the big event, and they, like us, wanted in the race.  We eventually got by the #40, but not before he body slammed us into the inside cement wall on the next lap after this picture. We were trying to pass him on the inside but he drove into our side causing significant damage to our front bumper and rad shroud area. We fixed it the best we could for the next heat race.   

There was less banging in the second heat race and we managed to come home in 4th place, however, the damage done in the first race showed by when our car was overheating slightly after this 10 lap dash.   We worked on the car to prepare for the 100 lap feature, not realizing the overheating would become an issue.

In the feature our car ran awesome, staying with the pack for the first half.  There was a Competition Yellow on lap 50 for fuel only.  It would be the end of the race for us. Severe overheating in the way of a constant water geyser would put us out for the night. Though we tried hard to fix it, it was better to save the engine.
