Kevin Cornelius Fights Back to Third Place Finish after Mid-race Wreck
Ashley McCubbin/KDR Motorsports Media Relations - This past Saturday night at Sunset Speedway, it’d be a hard fought night for KDR Motorsports as Kevin Cornelius would fight his way through the field to come home third after being involved in a wreck at halfway.
The Orangeville, Ontario driver would finish win the first heat after starting seventh. He would also win his second heat after starting on pole.
In the feature, Cornelius would start the No. 17 Halton Crushed Stone, Lee Sand and Gravel, Hanson Pipe, Sandbox Tech Child Care, Alliston Transmission, Ed’s Automotive and Fierce Wraps Late Model in the 10th position virtue of his points position.
By lap five, Cornelius would be battling Scott Beatty for the eighth position, completing the pass on lap six to begin to look for a way by Chris Morrow for seventh. He’d get by Morrow on lap seven, and then pass Billy Zardo and Bruce Rankin to move up to fifth on lap eight.
The first caution would come out on lap 11 for Zardo having a flat tire while Cornelius ran in the fifth position.
On the restart, Cornelius would take Keith Maiato and Taylor Holdaway three-wide for third, though the caution would come out when Kyle Mombourquette would spin behind them. Cornelius would be credited with the pass on Maiato, allowing him to move up to the fourth position.
On the restart, Maiato would go around behind Cornelius, bringing out another caution just after Cornelius passed Holdaway for third.
On the restart, it’d start out with Sean Grosman and Frank Davey running side-by-side for the lead, however when they came back around off of turn four, Grosman would get loose and come across the track. The result would be many of the front runners collected, including Cornelius, catching some damage on the passenger side door.
Cornelius would bring the car down pit road and under the eyes of crew members Andrew Little and Dick Launspach, and Jason Witty’s team, it was deemed that he’d be able to continue. He’d pull off pit road, lining up in the 13th position at the halfway mark in the feature.
On the restart, Cornelius would take Rankin and Thane Woodside three-wide, moving up to the 11th position and beginning to look for a way by Zardo for 10th when the caution would come out for Mombourquette stopping on track.
After the restart, Cornelius would begin his climb to the front, moving up to ninth on lap 17. He would pass Cronan for eighth on lap 20, followed by a pass on Dario Capirchio for seventh on lap 23. Cornelius would pass Morrow for sixth on lap 25 and get underneath Witty for fifth on lap 27. Though the caution would then come out as Davey would get loose and go around. Witty would be deemed the cause of the caution and be sent to the back, bumping Cornelius up to the fourth position.
On the restart, Cornelius would run side-by-side with Beatty for the third position, passing him on the last lap to come home with a third place finish. It marks his ninth top five finish in 12 feature races this season.
“Huge Thanks to Chris Morrow and Laurie Melson for getting us rolling in the right direction with the setup on the car,” Cornelius posted on the team’s facebook page. “Those guys are racing legends.”
As a result, Cornelius continues to sit third in the points, now 38 points behind Walters and only two points behind Bentley for second.
