So far this season, Mike Bentley has been riding a roller coaster as it has just been up and down. The first week saw Bentley destroy his car, having to buy a new car from McColl Racing Enterprises. The second week he was involved in a last lap incident coming to the checkered with Chris Morrow. He then bounced with his first Sunset Speedway Limited Late Model win the third week.
The last time the Late Models were out, Bentley was blackflagged while battling with Kevin Cornelius for the lead due to his fender flapping in the breeze. However, the roller coaster went back up on the fifth night, June 23rd, as Bentley brought home the feature victory.
In the first heat, Joey Woods would bring out the first caution with a spin. Mike Bentley would pick up his fourth heat win, followed by Tom Walters, Sean Cronan, Scott Beatty and Tony Tiemersma.
In the second heat, Gary Elliott would pick up his second heat win of the year, followed by Billy Zardo, Dario Capirchio, Chris Morrow and Kevin Cornelius.
In the third heat, Cronan would pick his first heat win of the year, followed by Walters, Bentley, Ernie Fumerton and Kyle Mombourquette.
In the fourth heat, Elliott would go for a spin on the first lap in turn one. Cornelius would pick up his fourth heat win of the year, followed by Morrow, Jason Witty, Taylor Holdaway and Capirchio.
The Late Model feature would start off with Gary Elliott and Ernie Fumerton on the front row as Joey Woods brought out the caution on the first lap for a spin. This marked Woods’ first start of the season at Sunset Speedway.
On the restart, Mike Bentley would make his way to the lead and lead all the way till the second caution for Frank Davey spinning on lap five. At this point, Fumerton now ran second, followed by Jason Witty, Billy Zardo and Chris Morrow. The restart would see Davey go for another spin, bringing out the third caution.
On the ninth lap, Scott Beatty would go for a spin while Bentley still led, now in front of Witty, Morrow, Fumerton and Zardo.
The fifth caution came out on lap 12 for Chris Morrow oiling the track down. Both Dario Capirchio and Kevin Cornelius would spin in the oil, however the spins were deemed after the moment of caution so both drivers remained in their positions. With Morrow’s problem, this would allow Fumerton and Zardo to move up a spot each while Elliott made his way back into the top five.
With five laps to go, the sixth caution would come out for Davey spinning again. Witty still ran second behind Bentley, with Zardo third followed by Cornelius and Walters.
Cornelius and Walters would both get by Zardo for third before the seventh and final caution came out for Fumerton spinning.
On the restart, Cornelius would get by Witty for second while Bentley led the final five laps to take home his second Sunset Speedway victory. Walters and Cronan rounded out the top five. Billy Zardo finished sixth, followed by Tony Tiemersma, Fumerton, Capirchio and Beatty.
In the point standings, Cornelius continues to lead, now 13 points over Walters. Bentley, meanwhile, sits fourth now, 56 points back of Cornelius, while Witty sits third.
