It was raining as the Spira ‐ Artik Ice Team arrived at the shop early in the morning, after a late night preparing the cars for the trip north to Sunset Speedway. Heavy rain was in the forecast for the morning, however the staff at Sunset Speedway gambled with the forecast that it was to clear in the early afternoon, so they encouraged all race teams to head for the speedway, and they would do everything in their power to get the show in.
After a considerable delay, while the speedway staff worked diligently to dry the race track, the cars were given multiple practice sessions to make adjustments to the green track. Billy and Samantha both started off with loose race cars and Jake had a push condition in the #22 RNR Cycle Mustang. Adjustments were made throughout the now sunny and hot afternoon and the cars lined up for the first of two sets of heat races. Jake started at the back of his first heat race, where he gathered valuable seat time to learn the lines to run on the track and did not challenge those in front of him for position. Samantha and Billy started 5th and 8th in their first heat race and Billy moved quickly through the field for the win as Samantha gained a position to finish 4th. Jake also used his second heat race to get seat time at the back of the field and Billy started up front in 2nd as Sam started 5th in their second heat. Billy once again found the checkered flag for his second win of the night and Sam finished 6th.
Billy was summoned to roll the dice after qualifying on the pole for the mini‐stock feature and after rolling a nine, was placed to start in that position for the 35 lap event. Samantha would start 13th and young Jake started 25th out of 27 cars. After the first four laps, the #10 pushed up the track, causing the #21 and #64 to get together and bring out the caution. The three involved cars went to the back of the field and Billy restarted 5th, Samantha 9th and Jake 24th. The caution returned two laps later for a car spinning on the back stretch at which point Billy was 2nd, Sam remained in 9th and Jake had moved up to 22nd. After the restart, the #400 moved well ahead of Billy who had cleared traffic and was trying desperately to catch the leader. By the half way mark, Billy was on the bumper of the #400, Sam had moved up to 7th and Jake also gained a position, now running in 21st. Billy made the move into the lead shortly thereafter, where he held on for the final laps capturing his third win of the day and second feature win of the weekend. Samantha had a good run and finished 7th with a damage free car and Jake also kept the car clean throughout his first 35 lap, invitational feature where he finished 20th.
In other news, team member Steve Laking who has been a Pro‐Late Model driver for many years was in attendance for the 75 lap Limited Late Model feature with his old Allstar Late Model that he rebuilt as a Limited Late. The trip to Sunset Speedway was the first time that Steve has raced the car and he piloted it to a mid‐pack finish. The damage free finish is just what Steve was looking for as his purpose was to shake the car down and get a feel for the handling. It was appropriate that Steve used Fathers Day to resurrect the car that has so many memories of working on it with his father. Brock Laking passed away in February of 2010 and although dearly missed, lives on in the memories. Spira Racing would like to wish all those fathers and to those that have lost theirs, a belated happy Fathers Day.
Next up for the entire 4 car Spira Team will be a return trip to Flamboro Speedway for the Meet the Drivers Night on Saturday June 22nd. Pit gates open at 4:00pm, the grandstand gates at 5:00pm, qualifying at 6:30 and racing begins at 8:00pm.
