The Spira ‐ Victaulic Team worked throughout the week on Samantha’s #81 to repair body damage that she received on her way to a 4th place finish at Flamboro Speedway last Saturday along with preparing the #81, #22 and #86 with carburetor, header and miscellaneous changes to suit the different rules and set‐up requirements for Sunset Speedway. Scott had his #44 set up and ready to go so he helped the other drivers prepare for the weekend.

Plenty of sun and very hot temperatures greeted the team as they arrived at Sunset Speedway for the second half of the Sauble ‐ Sunset Home and Home Series. Judging by the largest crowd of the year for the Speedway and the packed facility at Sauble Speedway for the first segment, the Home and Home Series was a huge success and was well received by drivers from both tracks.

After minor adjustments to all four cars to get them to turn through the corners at the very fast, high banked facility, the cars lined up for their heat races. Jake was the only Spira car in the first heat out of the 37 cars in attendance for the event that would start 30 cars in the 25 lap feature. After just one lap, Jake pulled off the track with unknown motor trouble that was a real surprise to the team as Jake ran some great lap times during the practice sessions and as a result, it looked like he was going to be very competitive. Billy was the lone Spira‐Lucas Oil car in the second heat where he would start 6th out of 12 cars. After the 2nd lap, Billy had made his way up to 3rd behind the #17 of Kevin Bridge and the #64 of Brandon McFerran. After running multiple laps side x side with the #64, Billy pulled into sole possession of 2nd on the 7th lap where he ran for the remaining three laps to finish. Samantha started 3rd and Scott 7th in the third heat where they maintained their positions throughout the first eight laps until Samantha got hit from behind and spun, bringing out the caution. Scott restarted 5th as Sam restarted 9th as a involved car. Both cars gained a position as they completed the final laps to finish 4th and 8th. The team was unable to determine the problem with Jake’s motor and to ensure that they did not cause severe damage to it by running the second heat or the feature, the car was put in the trailer and Jake was done racing for the night. Billy lined up for his second heat in 5th and was quick to move forward as he was up to 3rd by the end of the first lap behind the #1 and #9. Getting a run on the inside of the #39 on the third lap, Billy was now in second but a few car lengths behind the #1. At the half way mark, Billy caught the #1 and after two laps of side by side racing, Billy took over the lead where he ran to get the win. Scott lined up 2nd and Samantha 4th for the final heat race of the night and after a caution and red flag for two cars that got into a big wreck on lap three, Scott restarted 3rd with
Samantha 5th. Scott took advantage of avoiding a car that got loose on lap seven and moved up to 2nd, however Sam had no place to go and slowed to avoid contact. Scotty maintained the position to finish 2nd but Sam lost power in her motor on the final lap and pulled into the pits on the last lap. After investigating the motor in the #81, it was determined that a piston had broken and knocked off the end of a spark plug. Samantha changed out of her drivers suit to join Jake on the sidelines for the feature event. With a break in the action, the team enjoyed a birthday cake that was made by Scott’s mom, Kim for three of the drivers and two crew members that have birthdays within days of each other.

In front of a huge crowd, Billy lined up 3rd behind the #17 and #33 as Scott lined up 9th out of the 27 cars that survived the heat races as ten cars had either mechanical or severe damage during qualifying. Scott moved up to 8th as the field completed five laps and Billy moved to the outside of the #33 where he gained the position on lap eight, however the #17 had built up a considerable lead up front. The rest of the race went caution free and the #17 was far too quick for Billy to gain any ground without a caution to bring them together. The #17 took the win with Billy being a distant 2nd as Scott had a great run
throughout the feature to finish 7th.

Next up for the Spira ‐ Erb & Erb Insurance Team was to be a return trip to Sunset Speedway for a regular points night on Saturday July 20th, however with motor problems in two cars, the team may take a weekend off before the #22, #44 & #81 return to Flamboro speedway on the 27th and the #86 goes to Sauble Speedway where the track will be having their meet the drivers night.
