There was a high chance of rain as Jake, Samantha and Scott readied for Flamboro Speedway and Billy and his crew headed north to Sauble Speedway early in the day with the #86. Both tracks had scheduled a regular night of racing, however Sauble Speedway had an autograph session scheduled at 6:00pm that would give plenty of exposure to the race team and associated sponsors. The summer crowd at the popular beach area is always a good size and with many vacationers being from larger metropolitan areas, Ken Spira has received more calls in the past from customers that are exposed to his company through Sauble Speedway than any other track. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the increased forecast for rain that evening. Billy and crew turned around and returned to the race shop, where the other three cars were in the process of loading up for their trip to Flamboro Speedway.
With the rain falling in the Guelph area and the forecast for Flamboro looking like more of the same, the team waited as late as they could for word that the event would be cancelled. One hour after the team would usually head to the track, the #22, #44 and #81 headed south towards the speedway anticipating that the weather was better there and that they would get in the nights event. Just 10 minutes from the track, word got to the team that the event was also cancelled for the night and that the rain date would be the following day, so the team returned to the shop.
Plenty of sunshine greeted the team on Sunday morning and with an earlier 3pm race start, they headed to the track at noon instead of the usual 3pm departure time. With Billy scheduled to work and the #86 in the trailer, ready for Wednesday at Sauble Speedway, Jake, Scott and Samantha arrived at the track for practice, where they made minor
adjustments to suit the clean track condition. The #44 needed to be loosened up while the #81 & #22 received adjustments to tighten their cars after practice.
Twenty one cars lined up for the feature with Jake leading the way in the #22 Process Group Ford, followed by Samantha in 7th and Scott in 15th. As Jake took the green flag and led the field into turn one, he got together with the #37 and #12 through the center of the turn and both ended up into the wall at the exit of turn two. Although Jake went into the wall hard and destroyed the front of the car, he was fine and walked to the pit area as the track workers towed his car off the track. The caution returned on lap 2 for a car that was spun on the track and as the cars were put in order for the restart, Sam had made her way up to 5th followed by Scott in 6th. One lap later, the #79 turned Samantha as she was making the pass into 4th, putting both cars to the back. Track officials decided to also move Scott to the back, as they thought that minor contact with a car on his way through, made him an involved car. On lap 10, the #71 went hard into the wall bringing out another caution at which time Sam had worked her way up to 8th, followed by Scott in 9th. Four laps later, Samantha makes contact with Mark Klotz in the #26 car and before she gets by, gets spun by the #26 and both go to the back of the field as Scott had made his way back up to 6th for the restart. Samantha continued with her contact filled night as she made contact with the #79 followed by Scott making contact with the #50 car just two seconds later. Samantha continued on the track in 6th, however Scott had to enter the pits for repairs to the right front fender and come back onto the track at the rear. As the #31 took the checkered flag, Samantha had moved up to take a rough 5th place finish and Scott managed to pass a few cars in the final laps to finish
7th. Although the two Spira cars that finished the race had a rough night, they did survive with
minimal damage as the #22 would require a great deal of work to repair the damage to the front end.
Next up for the Spira ‐ Lucas Oil Team is a rare Wednesday night race at Sauble Speedway with the #86, for the popular Dash for Cash invitational event. Pit gates open at 4:00pm, the grandstand gates at 5:00pm, qualifying at 6:00pm and racing begins at 7:00pm.
