With Billy on vacation and the #86 sitting in the shop, the Spira ‐ Roof Trusses and Components Team departed for Sunset Speedway with the #22, #44 and #81 Fords. The team had replaced the motor in the #22 with a spare to determine if the mechanical issues were in fact in the motor or other gremlins within the car. Nothing but sunshine greeted the team as they arrived at the track and prepared for the multiple practice sessions that proved the issue in the #22 was in the motor as there was no problem with the spare. All three cars adjusted for loose conditions throughout the practice sessions with various adjustments such as sway bar, stagger, tire pressure, springs and wedge made the drivers happy with the handling of their cars. During the break, and prior to the heat races, Scott was interviewed by Inside Track reporter and Sunset Speedway announcer, Spencer Lewis. Spencer is one of, if not the best, announcer in the province and Scotts interview can be seen in the near future on Spencer’s youtube channel.
All three cars were in the same heat race and Samantha lined up on the pole followed by Scott in 3rd and Jake in 7th in the first of two qualifiers. Sam moved out front of the field as they took the green flag and Scott raced side by side with the #9 behind her as Jake maintained his position. Scott fell into third and was working the bumper of the #9 at the half way mark as Jake battled with the #51 (last year’s track champion), losing the position and dropping to 8th. The #51 continued towards the front and raced side by side with Scott for the final two laps, taking the position and putting Scott 4th as Samantha took the win, and Jake finished 8th. Scott started 4th in the second heat, followed by Samantha in 6th and Jake in 7th. Samantha and Scott raced side by side at the half way mark with Samantha taking the position to finish 3rd followed by Scott in 4th and Jake gained a position to finish 6th.
The spira ‐ Lucas Oil cars lined up for the feature with a 29 car field in front of a very good crowd. Scott started 11th, Sam 16th and Jake 20th. As the cars sorted themselves out through the first ten laps, Scott had worked his way up to 5th, Samantha 12th and Jake 18th when the second place car spun the leader, bringing out the caution that sent the two cars to the back, moving the field up two positions. The next three laps involved multiple cautions and as the #06 spun into the wall on lap 13, Scott was passed by the track points leader to put him 5th as Samantha had worked her way up to 8th and Jake ran 19th. Samantha was involved in the next caution as she bumped into the back of the #19, sending him around, however Sam would retain the 7th place position for the restart as the track officials deemed it a racing incident. Multiple cautions plagued the final laps and in order to speed up the feature, the track went from side by side restarts to single file. Samantha caught up to Scott with five laps remaining and as Scott slid up the track while trying to hold off the “X” car, causing both cars to wash up the track, giving Sam the opportunity to drive to the bottom, making it three wide, with Scott sliding back to 7th as Sam took over 5th. A crash out of turn two that Jake stopped to avoid, and was tagged in the left rear causing some minor body damage, brought out the red flag to check on the drivers. With only two laps remaining, the track decided to throw the checkered flag to conclude the race at 23 laps. Samantha would finish 5th, Scott 7th and Jake credited with a 17th place finish.
