Spira Racing - Post Race Update #27 - September 1, 2013
With Samantha headed off to University and Jake going to the Nascar truck race with his family, Scott and Billy were the only two Spira ‐ Fleet Image Team members that headed north to Sauble Speedway for the final points event of the season. With the race scheduled for the afternoon instead of the usual night race, the team had to depart early in the morning after a late night at Flamboro Speedway and working on the cars to get them set‐up for Sauble. Scott changed his #44 Eastside Auto Mustang over to the Sauble setup at the track before heading home with the car and trailer so they could depart from there, and Billy got the #86 ready for the track, after returning to the shop.
Both cars had trouble setting up the cars throughout the practice sessions as it was extremely hot and with the rubber being put on the track by the very fast Can‐Am Midgets, the cars were not reacting to the usual set‐up that the team had worked with at the track. Billy started 4th in his first of two heat races and after getting by the #52, moved into second behind the #36. The two cars pulled ahead of the field and as they put on a good show for the fans and it did not look like Billy had what it took to get by the #36 despite being glued to his bumper. On the final lap, Billy dove the #86 deep into the corner on the inside of the #36 and started a side by side battle as they came down the backstretch for the final time. With Billy carrying the momentum, he gained the position through the final turn and took the checkered flag for the win. Scott was in the next heat race where he started on the pole and the #20 car followed him to the front, glued to his bumper throughout the race. Scott did not overdrive the car and drove flawlessly through the final laps to pick up the second win for the East Side Auto Repair Team . Billy started 3rd in his second heat, behind the Spira Fire Protection sponsored #17 of Kevin Bridge and they were soon side by side for the lead, closely followed by the #36. Billy made the pass to the front on the 4th lap and was followed by the #36, putting Kevin 3rd. The order remained the same through the 10 lap race and Billy picked up his second win of the night. Scotty started 4th in his second heat and as the #20 pulled to the front of the field in the early laps, Scott moved in behind him in 2nd. Despite Scott on the bumper of the #20 throughout the race, he was not able to set up for a pass and finished 2nd.
After minor adjustments, the #44 and #86 readied for the 25 lap feature with Billy set to start 6th and Scott 10th. Billy was quick to move up to third after the first lap as Scott also gained three positions into 7th. Billy moved by the #52 into 2nd on the 3rd lap, however he was well behind the #17, who had pulled well ahead of the field. As it looked like the #17 was going to run away with the show, Scott pushed the #44 beyond its limit while exiting turn four and spun on his own bringing out the caution on lap six. Although not planned, this is just what Billy needed to bring the leader within reach. With Scott at the back of the field, Billy moved by the #17 on the outside to take over the lead where he would run uncontested for his 10th feature win of the season and 4th at the track. Scotty was moving up through the field as Billy ran out front and could have had a better finish, however he got stuck behind the 4th and 5th place cars that were battling for position ahead of him and despite trying to get his nose in the mix, the two cars left him little room. Scott made in three wide heading for the checkered flag on the final lap, however the front straightaway was not long enough to make the pass and he finished 6th within 10 feet of gaining two positions.
