Spira Racing - Post Race Update #28 - September 8, 2013
As the Spira‐Plasti‐Kote Team readied for their departure to Flamboro Speedway for Saturday nights race, there was a 70% chance of rain and it wasn’t long before the Speedway postponed the event until the next day.
Sunshine returned to the area on Sunday morning as the Spira‐Nuco Team headed to the track for the early race start of 2:00pm. Billy, Scott and Samantha all had loose conditions during the two practice sessions and minor adjustments were all that was required to make the drivers as happy with the handling of their cars as Jake was in the first practice session. Samantha also required an adjustment to the transmission mount as the drive shaft was hitting the safety hoop, a result of the damage incurred the previous week at Sunset ‐ which required several hours of repairs and with Sam attending Waterloo University, the job wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Scott, Wade, Jake and Steve Laking.
Jake started on the pole and was the only Spira‐Sloot Construction car in the first heat race, followed by the #37 and #10. The #37 got by Jake on the 1st lap, followed by Jake and the #50 who was now in 3rd. Although the #37 pulled well ahead throughout the race, Jake also kept well ahead of the #50 and the top three finished in that order. Scott started on the pole for the second race, followed by Billy in 2nd and Samantha in 9th. After the two team mates ran side by side for a lap, Billy pulled ahead and took over the lead as Samantha entered a three way battle with the #01 and #18 before she pulled ahead of them both and then advanced one more position to finish 6th. The #31 of Dave Bailey, who is the current points leader with 11 feature wins at Flamboro this season, stormed from 10th starting position in the short 10 lap race, to pass Scott and Billy, putting the #86‐2nd and the #44‐3rd.
Jake started on the pole for the 25 lap feature, followed by Scott in 7th, Billy in 8th and Samantha in 16th. The #37 took over up front as Billy went to the high side of the track to gain seven positions in the first two laps and settle into 2nd. Unfortunately, the hole that Billy made in the outside lane was also used by the #31 who followed him to the front and then he thanked him by passing Billy on the inside to take over the position, putting Billy 3rd. Scotty ran 9th, Jake 12th and Sam 15th as the #31 pulled in front of the field and Billy moved into 2nd well behind him. At the half way point, the #71 turned the #26, bringing out the caution and sending both cars to the back, moving Scott up to 7th, Samantha to 11th and Jake was falling back through the field in 14th from his pole starting position. Shortly after the restart, Scotty was racing with the #13 for position and they both got sideways but were able to continue, however minor contact punctured a tire on the Conestogo Roofing #44, and he was forced to exit the track for a tire change just as the caution came out, with five laps remaining. Scott rejoined the field at the rear as Sam had made her way up to 7th, Jake 15th and Billy remained in 2nd. With three laps remaining the #18 took second away from Billy, so he would finish 3rd as Samantha finished 6th, Jake 17th and Scott would finish 18th after his misfortune with a flat tire.
The mini‐stock feature was the second of seven features scheduled for the night so the team loaded up and watched the remaining races that saw Andrew Gresel finish the OSCAAR Super Late Model main event with a win in his Spira Fire Protection sponsored Ford.
Next up for the Spira ‐ Lucas Oil Team will have the team head north to Sunset Speedway for Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday September 14th. Pit gates open at 1:00pm, grandstands at 4:30pm and racing begins at 6:45pm.
