The Spira Race Team was up early to take all four cars to Protredz‐Tirecraft to be on display at their open house. Once the open house and BBQ were concluded, the race team decided to head for Sunset Speedway for an unscheduled event. Scotty headed home with the #44 instead of making the trip with the rest of the team as he had previous plans with his family to celebrate a milestone birthday with his mother.
With the late departure for the track, the team arrived for only one practice session prior to the heat races. Billy’s car was pretty quick and had a good set up since he was at the track the previous week, where he won both heat races before breaking the alternator bracket early in the feature. Thanks to Steve Laking’s fabrication skills, Ken was confident that they had eliminated any future issues with the bracket. Samantha was pretty happy with her #81‐Lucas Oil machine and only minor adjustments would be required for the double heat races. Jake was introduced to the crowd as the youngest driver to compete at the speedway and he ran a successful practice session with his only complaint that the car had a push in the centre of the corner. Minor adjustments were made to all cars and they lined up for their heat races.
Samantha started 2nd in the first heat and quickly put the #81 into the lead where she cruised to the win. Billy started 3rd and Jake 11th in the second heat, where Billy got stuck behind a very slow car that almost stopped as they took the green flag and by the time he got going, was unable to catch the #51 and #33 who finished up front with Billy 3rd. Jake maintained his 11th place starting position to finish where he started in his first race at the speedway.
Samantha started 7th in her second heat and worked her way up through traffic to get her second checkered flag of the evening. Billy started 5th and Jake 9th for their second heat race, and with a better start, Billy made his way to the front for the win as Jake finished 7th.
Billy started 3rd for the 25 lap feature followed by Samantha in 13th and Jake decided to start at the back of the field although he qualified 7th out of the 22 cars in attendance. Billy was quick to get to the front and take the lead where he was able to hold off the #51 and #33 who had a side by side battle behind him. The win was the first feature finish for Billy at Sunset Speedway and the second for Spira Racing as Steve Laking also piloted the #86 to a win in 2012 when filling in for Billy when he was on vacation. Sam moved up to 9th in the early going, however she spent most of the race marred in heavy traffic that prevented her from moving forward. Once the field sorted itself out, Samantha was able to gain two more positions by the end of the race where she would finish 7th with an ill handling car as it had picked up a bad push as the race went on. Jake had a few mechanical issues throughout the race as the car mysteriously shut off on two occasions. One, brought out the caution for Jake slowing on the front stretch without power and after he got the car restarted and went into the pits, Randy and Wade looked for the problem, finding none, Jake returned to the back of the field for the restart. The mechanical or electrical malfunction continued for the rookie driver of the #22 Process Group Mustang, however he did manage to keep it going through the final laps and finished 17th.
