After being rained out on the September 21st weekend, Billy and Samantha headed to Sunset Speedway for the two day Velocity Weekend event as Jake and Scott headed to Flamboro Speedway. The #81 and #86 team left the shop at 8:00am in order to be at the track early, as parking in the pits would be at a premium - Sunset Speedway was the place to be for most cars province-wide. With a great weather forecast, it was a packed house as expected and 41 mini-stocks showed up to battle for the 28 starting positions for just 28 starting positions in Sundays 30 lap feature event.
After finding a parking spot in the pits that were overflowing with over 200 cars, Sam and Billy entered the track for their practice sessions and then for their two heat races. Only the top 18 cars would get an automatic pass to the feature the next day and the balance would have to qualify in a 15 lap, last chance race. Billy and Sam were in two separate heat races that had Samantha finish 4th in her first and 7th in the second that qualified her 16th in Sundays feature. Billy finished 2nd in both his races and that would place him second for the feature behind the #10.
At Flamboro Speedway, Jake started on the pole in his heat race and finished 2nd behind the #26 as Scott started 8th and finished 5th in his. Jake once again lined up in the pole position for the feature and finished 11th at the conclusion of the 25 lap race to score his best finish of his rookie season. Scott started 12th and with his car handling extremely well, moved through the field to finish 4th.
The two car team returned to Sunset on Sunday and after 22 cars tried to qualify for the final 10 starting positions, the #10 rolled the dice for an inversion that would put Billy back to 8th and Samantha staying 16th for the 30 lap feature. Billy moved up to 6th in the early laps, however it was soon apparent that they had tightened the car up too much after the last practice session and the car had picked up a bad push that prevented Billy from getting on the throttle as soon as he needed, to keep pace with the front runners. Samantha had moved up to 14th, when the #10 spun, bringing out the first caution. Billy ran side by side with the #17 for 7th as Samantha held her own in 13th until the caution returned for the #91 who lost a wheel that hit the #64 and took them both out for the night on lap 22. Billy restarted 6th and Sam moved up two positions to 11th as they returned to green flag racing. With just three laps remaining and with Billy fighting a bad push to hold off the #33 and #10, Samantha was running three wide for 9th when she almost cleared the #6 , but ran out of room and got tagged and spun out in the centre of turns one and two to bring out the final caution of the night. Samantha was sent to the rear of the lead lap cars, where she restarted 22nd and finished 18th, as Billy held off the #10 and #33 to finish 6th.
Next up for the Spira Team will see Samantha, Jake, Scott and Billy return to Flamboro Speedway on October 05th and 6th for the Oktoberfest Classic - if they decide to choke down the exorbitant $60.00 cost per person to get into the pits, for the two day event. Pit gates open at 10:00am, grandstands at 12:00pm and racing begins at 3:00pm on Saturday for qualifying and at the same times on Sunday for the features.
