With good car counts throughout the entire season last year, it was a success for Mark Dilley and the entire Sunset Speedway staff.
Despite the success, Sunset is ready to up their game for 2012.
“To stay on top of the game, we’ve got to pick up our end of it at the Speedway and I think you’ll see that in 2012,” Dilley says.
For 2012, Sunset is introducing a new series titled the McColl Pro Series.
“We’re going to have the McColl Series that we’re starting off,” Dilley says. “There’s going two Sunday shows, two Wednesday shows which will have open late models, super stocks, mini stocks, with its own separate points fund.”
The invitationals are set to be run two Sundays and two Wednesdays – Sunday May 27th, Sunday June 17th, Wednesday July 11th and Wednesday August 15th.
The idea of running Wednesday nights was brought forth after the success that the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series has had running Wednesday nights in Saskatoon.
“You’re not competing against a lot of stuff,” Dilley says. “It makes it easier for the Open Late Model guys so you’re not competing against their home track or affecting that at all. So it’s the only way to do it.”
The McColl Shootout Series, which featured Limited Late Models, Super Stocks/Thunder Car and Mini Stocks, was a huge success as drivers from all across Ontario came out for each invitational. In the end, Sunset Speedway drivers took the three crowns with Sean Cronan winning LLM, Lane Zardo winning SS/TC and Doug Butler winning MS.
Beyond the new series, Dilley expects a good season with what Sunset has planned for this year.
“We have three OSCAAR races, hobby cars, TQ Midgets, American TQ Midgets – really, just a packed season,” he says. “Racing every Saturday night, except for June 16th. Outside of that, just got lots of Sunday racing and to close it with the Velocity 250. So we’re excited. We got our full schedule – more racing, more excitement, more fun.
