2020 was looking to be a busy year for Sam Mayer.
In February alone, the 2019 ARCA Menards Series East Champion had already traveled across the United States to compete in the East’s season-opener at New Smyrna Speedway and then ten days later, partook in the West’s first race at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.Things were going good for Mayer, as he won both of the events and looked like he had a good head of momentum heading into an upcoming schedule that would include a full-time effort in the East and the Sioux Chief Showdown. The plan was also to get him some starts in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.
Then, like everything else in the world, all of NASCAR’s series paused and are now left trying to rebuild the schedule.
For Mayer, this leaves a level of uncertainty moving forward. He will compete in the East Series’ return to at Toledo Speedway on June 13 but, after that it is very much TBA on what his future plans look like.
“Hopefully we can just come out and give her all she has, and hopefully it is a win but, at this point we are just looking for solid finishes,” Mayer said in a Zoom press conference Wednesday. “We really don’t know what we are doing the rest of the year, whether it is going for championships or, as many wins as possible with my schedule. We are going to try and do our best wherever we go and hopefully they are all wins.”
It is worth noting one of his truck starts was set to come at the June 12 event at Iowa Speedway, but it was previously announced that all action at the track has been cancelled for the year. There is no word if Mayer will replace the scheduled date, but he noted he still plans to get in “as many truck races as possible.”
With the unknowns in his schedule, Mayer realizes it will be important to take advantage of any action he does see with his GMS Racing team.
“Any race I get to run is just a big opportunity to put my name out there and at this point, it makes it a big deal and, I want to go out there and preform because we really don’t know what is going to happen the rest of the year,” Mayer said. “Hopefully, we can go for a championship, and go for multiple championships. We are not going to go for the West because we (GMS) are an east team and we are going to stay out there. Truck race wise we are going to do the best we can and go out and do it anyway. We are going to go out and try to have fun and hopefully the wins come with it.”
If Mayer decides to run for the East Championship, he would look to become the first back-to-back champion since Ryan Truex, who won the title in 2009 and 2010.
