After missing the Brickyard 400 due to testing positive for coronavirus, Jimmie Johnson has been cleared to return to competition, beginning this weekend at Kentucky Speedway.
Last Friday, Johnson was tested upon learning this morning that his wife, Chandra, tested positive after experiencing allergy-like symptoms. The team immediately was in contact with NASCAR about Johnson’s diagnosis and the steps moving forward.
To be cleared to return to competition, a driver must produce two negative COVID-19 test results that are taken 24 hours apart, while showing no symptoms. Johnson, whom was asymptomatic the entire period, produced those tests on Monday and Tuesday.
“My family is so grateful for the incredible love and support we’ve received over the last several days,” Johnson said. “I especially want to thank Justin Allgaier for stepping in for me at Indy and being a true pro. I’m excited about getting back to business with my team this weekend.”
Despite missing the Brickyard 400, Johnson remained above the cutline for the playoffs, ranked 15th in the standings, 46 points ahead of 17th.
Hendrick Motorsports added in their statement on Wednesday that four crew members were tested for COVID-19 with all four receiving negative results. As a result, the No. 48 team will have its regular personnel roster for Sunday’s event at Kentucky.
