A late caution involving Parker Klingerman forced the NXS field to battle out a NASCAR Overtime restart. Hamlin restarted second in the outside lane and had a great push from his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, John Hunter Nemechek. With the help from the No. 20, Hamlin was able to hold off a hard-charging Austin Hill to the finish line, claiming the victory.
For most of the race, Nemechek was the dominant driver of the day. He started from the pole position and led 99 laps throughout the event and won the first two stages of the race. The only area where the No. 20 team seemed to lose spots was on pit road; Austin Hill was able to beat Nemechek out of the pits several times in the race. After pushing his teammate to the win, Nemechek finished third.
“I’m just frustrated with myself. I didn’t make the right adjustment at the last stop and it’s on me,” Nemechek commented afterwards to reporters. “I said I didn’t need an adjustment and probably did. It sucks coming up short here twice with such fast Toyota GR Supras both times. We’ll keep plugging. Solid points day for us. Gained some points back on the 21 (Austin Hill), I think that puts us back to second in points as well. Go to Kansas next week to finish out the regular season and hope to go win all three stages instead of two.”
The rising NASCAR stars head to Kansas Speedway to battle out the final regular season event. Catch the race on NBC Sports, on Saturday, September 9th, at 3 pm EST.
