One of NASCAR’s greatest dynamic duos will be split up at the end of the 2023 season. Kevin Harvick announced his retirement back in January of this year. He is ready to walk away after 22 seasons of full-time Cup Series racing.
Childers and Harvick teamed up at Stewart-Haas Racing for the 2014 season. Right away, the pair clicked. They earned five wins, 14 top-fives, and 20 top-ten finishes, and were strong enough to win the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship.
Nine years later, Childers and Harvick are approaching their final stretch of races together. Eight races remain for the duo to earn one final win, maybe even a championship.
Childers spoke to NEWS FROM THE PITS at Darlington Raceway about his emotions heading into the final ten races with Harvick, “It definitely hit me like a ton of bricks this week, just realizing that there is ten to go, you know everything that we’ve done and accomplished together is certainly special.”
Since 2014 they have accumulated 37 wins as a total, the most wins out of every driver and crew chief pair in the sport in the last ten seasons.
One thing is missing for Childers and Harvick in their final season, a win. The pair was strong enough to put the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford into the playoffs off of points, so they also have a shot at one last championship run.
Hopefully these next ten we can make memorable, go out there and compete, maybe win a couple races, and make it super special,” he told NEWS FROM THE PITS.
Since the interview, two races have been completed. Harvick finished 19th at Darlington, and 11th at Kansas. He sits below the cutline in 14th. The 48-year-old will have to have a solid run at Bristol to hold off other drivers looking to spoil his final championship run.
Tune into NBC Sports at 7:30 pm this Saturday night, September, 16th to see if Harvick and Childers can defend their position.
