TRACKING THE CHANGES: NASCAR Xfinity Series

By: Ashley McCubbin

The theme of each NASCAR Silly Season is figuring out what the changes will be, so that way you can find the ride that your favourite driver(s) is(are) behind the wheel of. It’s why News From The Pits is here to help you sort through it all.

After winning the ARCA Menards Series Championship with 10 wins and 17 top-five’s in 18 races, Jesse Love will take the next step in joining Richard Childress Racing for 2024. The move seems like one that should be beneficial, after both Austin Hill and Sheldon Creed made the playoffs last season, with four wins for Hill. Love replaces Creed, and that may be welcome considering the drama between the pair of teammates last season at Martinsville Speedway.

#21: Austin Hill, Richard Childress Racing, Global Industrial Chevrolet Camaro, #2: Sheldon Creed, Richard Childress Racing, Whelen Chevrolet Camaro

Sheldon Creed has yet to announce his plans officially, however it seems as though they were spoiled by Hill in his comments after Martinsville, telling Frontstretch.com that Creed was headed to Joe Gibbs Racing. The California native will replace ideally John Hunter Nemechek, who joins Legacy Motor Club in the NASCAR Cup Series. After feeling as though he was being considered second fiddle at RCR, this will give Creed the chance to prove himself in the team’s primary entry with no excuses. After all, Nemechek made the Championship 4 with seven wins last year.

After scoring his first career win at Phoenix Raceway last season, Sammy Smith makes the move from Joe Gibbs Racing to JR Motorsports. Smith put together a strong rookie campaign with six top-five’s alongside placing sixth in the standings. The same performance should come with JRM as evident by the team placing both Justin Allgaier and Sam Mayer in the Championship 4 for 2023, but that also was the prediction for Brandon Jones – which wasn’t meant. This move makes sense, though, as Pilot Flying J was aligned with the Chevrolet-backed team with Michael Annett so it’s a reunion of sponsorship.

Josh Berry, who drove the No. 8 for JRM in 2023, will be moving up to the Cup Series with Stewart-Haas Racing.

After running nine races last season between SS Green Light Racing and Mike Harmon, Dawson Cram will be given a full-time opportunity with JD Motorsports. After failing to qualify for eight races beyond the nine ran, he will hope to improve upon his season-best 19th at Phoenix Raceway. There is potential with the Johnny Davis led team, after watching Brennan Poole place inside the top-20 on seven occasions with a best performance of fifth at Talladega Superspeedway.

Brennan Poole makes the move to Alpha Prime Racing, hopeful of building upon those numbers as a lot of people still wonder what if with him following the situation that happened with Chip Ganassi Racing those years ago. For the record, Alpha Prime Racing’s 2023 driver Ryan Ellis placed one spot lower than Poole in points with nine top-20 performances.

#23: Anthony Alfredo, Our Motorsports, Pit Boss Grills Chevrolet Camaro

Anthony Alfredo is on the move, making the switch from B.J. McLeod Motorsports to Our Motorsports in 2024. He proved his potential last season with 12 top-20 finishes including a pair of eighths. It’s a reunion of sorts as they spent 2022 together, picking up four top-10’s, including a season-best fifth at Auto Club Speedway.

Josh Williams made headlines last season when he left his car parked on the frontstretch at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He will hope to be in the news for a different reason, after joining Kaulig Racing for 2024. The Chevrolet-backed team placed two drivers inside the top-10 last year so it will be Williams’ chance to prove himself as a driver with a top-tier organization after scoring three top-10’s last year driving for Mario Gosselin.

Daniel Hemric, who drove the No. 11 for Kaulig Racing in 2023, will be moving up to the Cup Series with the team.

Williams will have experience in a teammate, though, as A.J. Allmendinger returns to the Xfinity Series on a full-time basis. Easily considered one of the early championship favorites, he won five races in 2021 and 2022 in his previous title chases to a best season-end points finish of fourth. Oh, and he had an average finish of 3.8 with two wins in five starts last season. The move comes after taking on the Cup Series schedule in 2023, with one win and seven top-10’s en route to placing 21st in points.

Hailie Deegan takes the next step of her young career, making the move from the Truck Series to the Xfinity Series with AM Racing. A lot of people are skeptical on this move, and wondering just how many chances she will get after just four top-10’s in the past two years, while driving for David Gilliland Racing (now TRICOR Garage) and ThorSport Racing. However, the move may fit her driving style as she did place 13th in her Xfinity debut.

Although his plans are not yet known, it is worth noting Kaz Grala will not return to Sam Hunt Racing in 2024 after scoring two top-five’s and nine top-10’s this past year.
