The Western Swing of the NASCAR Canada Series got off to a thrilling start at Edmonton International Raceway, where Marc-Antoine Camirand captured the win at the NAPA 300 after 300 laps of high-intensity short-track racing.
The race featured no fewer than six lead changes involving four different drivers, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout the evening. Camirand, who led 71 laps, surged to the front in the closing stages to earn his second win of the season and reclaim the top spot in the championship standings. He also earned the Gulf Race Fuels Move of the Race.
“Great finish, we had such a good race here. We struggled a bit in qualifying but we managed to have a good race. At the end, I’m really proud of the guys. It’s a great way to start the trip out west,” said Camirand.
Pole sitter Donald Theetge, who was also fastest in practice earlier in the day, led a race-high 108 laps and crossed the checkered flag in second place. He also claimed the Evirum Fastest Lap of the Race.
“After Riverside and the frustrations we had there, this almost feels like a win. We were fast in practice and qualifying and led laps. I think we had a good car. For us, it feels like a victory. Now we’re heading to Saskatoon, and our goal is to win as we’ve already won there before.” said Theetge.
Kevin Lacroix rounded out the podium after leading 50 laps. “I think third place is the best we could’ve done. The car was running great in the first half, then less so after that. But being third still means points,” said Lacroix. Reflecting on the upcoming race at Sutherland Automotive Speedway, he added that he finished second last year in Saskatoon and that the team continues to improve.
Finishing out the top five were Andrew Ranger, who secured fourth place, and D.J. Kennington, who led for a total of 81 laps and finished fifth.
It was a tough evening for Louis-Philippe Dumoulin, who struggled with his car for much of the race. Although the team attempted repairs, the damage left him too many laps down to recover, resulting in a DNF.
The NASCAR Canada Series continues its Western Swing on Wednesday, July 16, at Sutherland Automotive Speedway in Saskatoon for the NASCAR Canada 250.
