Ferrucci’s Toronto Struggles Heightened by “Driver Error” in IndyCar Warm Up

TORONTO, Ontario —- Santino Ferrucci will not be taking the green flag for the Honda Indy Toronto later on today.

A light rainfall throughout the morning in Ontario made the streets of Exhibition Place a little slick and proved to be costly for Ferrucci. The driver of the No. 14 Chevrolet got a little sideways off of turn seven, followed by contact with the wall on driver’s right and spun around into turn eight.

The contact resulted in significant left side front damage to his machine, which will leave him on the sidelines as the team will not be able to make repairs ahead of the event.

Ferrucci said he was on the alternate tire rather than the primary, trying to get a read for later on this afternoon, with the extra boost of power from the Hybrid getting him into a bit of trouble.

“Just struggling honestly with the car,” he told reporters after being released from the IndyCar Medical Center. “It is wet in that corner and I had been lifting, just out of habit pulling the Hybrid, and I forgot to turn the Hybrid off and it just unloaded the car and I just lost it. Thankful for the AMR Safety team and praying for my boys to get the car fixed to get up there and race for a podium.”

Ferrucci had lacked pace the day before during qualifying, only timing in 23rd quickest for the event.

“It felt good in qualifying, just a couple tenths off,” he commented. “Just struggling with stability, rear locking, and we changed a bunch of stuff overnight. It felt really good and it was building my confidence up and just unfortunate mistake on my part.”

Unfortunately, Toronto has not treated Ferrucci well in the past, as he was one of several drivers involved in the big wreck during last year’s event that resulted in him catching air between turns one and two.
