PREVIEW: XPEL Grand Prix at Road America

By: Ashley McCubbin

Team Penske may have had things go their way at the Indianapolis 500, but the argument could be said that the tides are turning in the favor of Chip Ganassi Racing. They currently lead the standings, won the most recent event (Detroit Grand Prix), and are the defending winners of the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America.

So who will come out with the upper hand this weekend – Penske, Ganassi, or another team that is in the field?

Chip Ganassi Racing

Scott Dixon enters this weekend as the points leader, ahead of his teammate Alex Palou by 18 points. Dixon picked up the checkered flag last weekend in Detroit, marking his second win of the 2024 season. He has won at Road America twice before, and boasts an average of 6.8 (tied-second best of the series) across nine previous appearances.

Palou, meanwhile, knows what it takes to get the job done as he won at Road America last season en route to capturing the championship at season’s end. It marked his second win in Wisconsin, backing up the first checkered flag in 2021, with an average finish of 7.8 across five appearances.

Marcus Armstrong is beginning to equal the performance of his teammates, picking up a third on the streets of Detroit for his third top-10 in the last four races. This will mark his first IndyCar start at Road America.

Team Penske

Josef Newgarden won the Indianapolis 500, but unfortunately fell six laps behind on the streets of Detroit to place 26th and drop him back to 10th in the standings. He has won at Road America before, accomplishing the feat in 2018 and 2022, boasting an average finish of 6.8 across nine appearances.

Will Power is the highest of the Captain’s men in the standings, currently ranked third, 31 points behind Dixon for the lead following a sixth in the Detroit Grand Prix. He won the inaugural event at Road America in 2016, and has scored five top-five’s in nine appearances for an average finish of 8.8.

Andretti Autosport

Marcus Ericsson may be finding his groove, as evident by scoring a runner-up this past weekend on the streets of Detroit for just his second top-five of the season. He boasts an average finish of 6.8 with a pair of top-five’s and five top-10’s in six appearances.

Colton Herta has the best average finish of all drivers at Road America – fifth across six appearances – but has yet to pick up a checkered flag on the road course. He could use a good finish this weekend, currently ranked seventh in the standings following a pair of finishes outside the top-15.

Meyer Shank Racing

Felix Rosenqvist knows what its like to hold a checkered flag at Road America, doing so in 2020, but has since scored finishes of sixth and 20th in Wisconsin. He has some momentum on his side following an eighth-place finish in Detroit.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

It may have shocked some when Christian Lundgaard won on the streets of Toronto last year, but he could do the same at Road America. He has been solid in his previous two appearances with finishes of 10th and seventh. The speed has also been there this year as evident by the finishes of third and sixth on two of the road courses this season.
