Rinus Veekay Puts Together Perfect Sweep in Toronto

TORONTO, Ontario — Rinus Veekay certainly had a memorable weekend in Toronto. Starting on pole for both races, he was able to walk away from Canada with a pair of wins.

On Saturday, grabbing the early advantage paid off for him as he was able to scoot away despite craziness behind him.

“It was a chaotic race, very crazy race,” he told POPULAR OPEN WHEEL. “But two of my championship contenders didn’t finish, which was lucky for me and gained me a lot of points in the championship. I think maximum points was the focus for this race, and it all worked out.”

Seeing the event play out, he was able to pick up some critical points – including how to handle a different starting line than previous years, which paid off for him on Sunday in being able to scoot away again.

“I’m really happy,” he said. “Again a street course sweep for me, and closing up the championship point standings to one point behind Parker. So that keeps it pretty competitive. I didn’t expect to be this close to him after this weekend.”

Sitting second in points, Veekay admits that luck hasn’t always gone his way this year, despite just one finish outside of the top-five.

“It’s been a good season,” he said. “I’ve been less lucky than last year, but the technical side has been so-so, just tougher. It’s very strong field, so I’m happy. I think if we can keep it going like poles all the time, I think that will work and we’ll be in the battle for the championship again.”

With his championship opponent Parker Thompson placing eighth in both races, it was certainly a weekend for him to earn some points as he will enter Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course just sitting a single point behind.

“I’m going into Mid-Ohio with a lot of confidence after this weekend,” he said. “I know the team is working super hard and we’re going to have an in-season test in a few days, so we’ll see how the speed is there, but I’m confident we’ll be quick.”
