After winning the Pacific 2000 Championship, Jason Reichert will take the next step of his young racing career by competing in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship with Marotti Racing. Prior to this weekend’s Mazda Road to Indy Shootout, he spoke about the upcoming year with POPULAR OPEN WHEEL.
POPULAR OPEN WHEEL: What are your thoughts on the upcoming USF2000 campaign?
JASON REICHERT: I’m really excited to be with Marotti Racing. We’re definitely hoping to do the full year but depending how the shootout goes, it will depend on how many races we’re able to do. But I’m excited for it.
POW: Why do you feel Marotti Racing is the right fit for you?
JASON: Being a Christian-based race team is important to me, because it’s one of the first of it’s kind so I think that’s awesome; to be surrounded by people who are like-minded to me is really important to me. Also, he’s been involved in IndyCar and many sponsorship deals so I feel they also know how to run a team well, so I think it’ll go well.
POW: What track are you looking forward to most?
JASON: Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the track that I am looking forward to most due to the history.
POW: How did you get started in racing?
JASON: Well, I started racing go-karts when I was 10 years and over several years, I won six championships at it. Then I went to Formula Ford and I finished second in my first year, winning the championship the following year. Then last year, I ran Pacific F2000 Series and won the championship, which helped me to get to the Road to Indy.
POW: What’s been the most memorable moment of your racing career to date?
JASON: Definitely winning the SCCA National Runoffs would be the most memorable moment of my racing career, because that was really huge. It was such a big event, very well run by the SCCA, so I was really happy to win that.
POW: Who is your racing hero?
JASON: I definitely would say Josef Newgarden. Since he won in his first year with Team Penske, he’s always seemed really cool and sounded great in interviews, so he’d be my racing hero.
POW: If you were able to climb the Road to Indy and race in IndyCar one day, what would that mean to you?
JASON: That’s definitely been my goal. It’s always been my goal to race in IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500, and that would be huge for me.
