Christian Rasmussen Finding Rhythm in Rookie Campaign

TORONTO, Ontario — Any driver starting off in a new series is bound to hit a couple rough waters as they learn. Christian Rasmussen knows that all too well through the beginning of his Cooper Tires USF2000 rookie campaign. However, it’s beginning to come together as he experienced a career-best weekend.

Rasmussen ran up front through the first event on the streets of the Toronto on Saturday, battling for a podium spot all race long en route to a runner-up finish.

“It turned out good,” he told POPULAR OPEN WHEEL afterwards. “I made a mistake there, and fell back to third. But I got back up to second in the race, so I’m happy with it.”

He carried the momentum into Sunday, putting together a flawless performance en route to scoring his first career victory.

The success comes following a rough start to the season, with just two top-five finishes (a best finish of fourth) in the first seven races of the year entering Toronto. The reason is simple – experience behind the wheel in getting used to the USF2000 cars, and finding the balance he needs.

The resulting product of that shined through in the Toronto weekend alone. After the mistakes he made on Saturday, he mentioned that for Sunday he needed to “just calm down a little, get into a rhythm, and get perfect laps all the time to not make mistakes that I made today.” He was able to do that, as the No. 6 entry did not slip up once throughout the event.

The victory is now only going to help his confidence, which will be beneficial as he looks to earn points in the second-half of 2019. He currently sits fifth in the standings, just 14 points behind Colin Kaminsky.
