Telitz and Veekay Collide in Battle for Indy Lights Lead

TORONTO, Ontario — The Indy Lights race on Sunday at the Honda Indy Toronto featured a couple fireworks, with Aaron Telitz and Rinus Veekay making contact battling for the lead.

Telitz was able to grab the early lead, and began to stretch a small gap over the field as he done en route to winning on Saturday. Though as the laps began to add up, Veekay began to reel in his competitor. Everything came together entering turn three, with the pair would enter side-by-side, making contact before hitting the tire barrier. Oliver Askew would get by the pair of them, leading the rest of the way to the victory.

“I was on the inside, we broke super late – I think he broke super late, and he turned down on me and we hit, and that was it,” Aaron Telitz told POPULAR OPEN WHEEL.

Following the event, the pair of drivers would talk over the incident peacefully in the Juncos Racing paddock.

“I already made one attempt to pass Aaron Telitz and he pushed me wide; I had to go off-power to not hit the wall,” Veekay told POW after the conversation. “Then the second time, I went deep on the outside in turn three and turning in, we hit each other and went into the wall. Very unfortunate.”

While Telitz is on a race-to-race basis with Belardi Auto Racing, Veekay is running the full schedule with Juncos. The incident caused him to lose valuable points in the standings, now 25 behind Askew.

“For me, it’s just flat out,” Veekay said. “I’m 25 points behind but that doesn’t mean anything. We are just going to keep pushing forward.”

Although he is looking forward to all of the races in the second half, he says he’s most excited for Laguna Seca “as it’s a new track so looking forward to it.”
