Avondale, Ariz. – David Gilliland, the co-owner of DGR-Crosley, said he was anxious to make his only ARCA Menards Series West start of the 2020 season at Phoenix Raceway and get a better feel for what his team’s equipment needs for improvement ahead of 2021.

He learned quickly his stuff is pretty fast.

The 44-year-old from Riverside, California, posted the best lap time in Saturday’s qualifying session ahead of the Arizona Lottery 100. Gilliland took his No. 4 Simpson/Lincoln Welders Ford around the one-mile oval in 27.452 seconds (131.138 mph) to take the General Tire Pole award.

Joining Gilliland on the front row for Saturday’s race will be Sam Mayer, the 17-year-old who won this year’s ARCA Menards Series East and Sioux Chief Showdown championships. Mayer posted a lap time of 27.481 seconds (131.000 mph) to qualify second.
