Will Power Rebounds from Saturday Woes for Podium in Markham

By: Ashley McCubbin

MARKHAM, Ontario — If you would have asked Will Power on Saturday after qualifying if he would finish the Ontario Honda Indy Dealers at Markham on the podium, his answer would be, “I’m thinking it is impossible.”

He accomplished the feat, though, making his way through the field en route to a third-place finish for his fourth podium of 2026.

As mentioned, the weekend did not start off as planned for Power as he suffered significant damage following an incident in turn 10 during Saturday’s second practice session, forcing his team into a scramble ahead of qualifying to be ready. They were able to get the work done, only for Power to go for a spin in turn four with 57 seconds left in the first round. As a result, he would take the green flag from the last position on the grid in 25th.

A combination of strategy, avoiding trouble throughout the event, and a late-race pass on Alex Palou, though, allowed the Andretti Autosport driver to score the solid result.

It not only marked the fourth podium of 2026, but also continued his recent trend of success with just one finish outside the top-eight in the late six weeks. The success is something Power attributes to the team chemistry coming together.

“Just clicking within the team,” he told News From The Pits. “It’s just takes time for all that stuff to just come together really nicely.”

This year marks Power’s first year with Andretti Autosport after having spent the last several years of his career with Team Penske.

“They do things in different ways, but I brought some of the stuff that we did over there, processes and so on, and they obviously had some great stuff that they did,” he explained. “We took the best of each. We’ve improved a ton in some places. It’s been really good, actually.”
